What Triggered Will Smith?

Let’s dive right in with what a trigger is.

A trigger is a kind of subconscious memory of a past experience that gets activated by an outside event.

It appears that Chris Rock’s joke directed at Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith at the 2022 Oscars was the trigger in this case.

Will Smith was seen to respond to his wife’s expression when she rolled her eyes after Chris Rock’s statement about her hairstyle.

To some people what Will Smith did was outrageous and one of Chris Rock’s fellow hosts, Amy Schumer, says she is “triggered and traumatised” by the incident and is “waiting for the sickening feeling to away”.

Later Will said “Love makes you do crazy things” and  “I am a work in progress.”

What did he mean by this and what story was triggered inside of him?

Where do we hold our subconscious memories?

When we are wounded around something that is important to us, we form a belief from that experience.   For example, if we saw our mother being beaten by our father we might internalise our feeling and create a story which may say:

“No one will ever treat a woman like that again in my presence.”

Or if we were too young at the time to react it may cause us to feel shame or regret that we didn’t. We might vow to ourselves that we will always stand up for an important woman in our life in the future.

Was this the case for Will Smith?

An old story around how he saw his father hit his mother got triggered and he reacted from the wound he internalised because of it?

We are all works in progress and life is a journey of self-discovery.   The more we get to know our internal wounds and work through them the more peace we will have in our life.

One of the ways I support people on their journey of self-discovery is through understanding where in our body we hold onto our past traumas and stories.

One such place is in our energy centres known as chakras.   Each of the chakras has a different awareness attached to it.    For example, our first chakra governs our sense of belonging, our feelings around our safety and security. It also has to do with our mother issues and how we trust ourselves and others.
